Netherlands x Reader - Request from JoannaFaire

Real Title(Wonderful suggestion from AnimeLoveFoEva) : Tulips, Roses, What's the difference?

~

"So, broer , who are you going to ask as a date for the prom?" Belgium asked exitedly to her brother, Netherlands.

The school prom was coming up soon, and most students were rushing to get a date as soon as possible. It was common that some students would just skip the dance, for example, Netherlands. He had planned not to go, preferring to stay at home and watch over his tulips. However, Belgium, his sister, would never allow that. She would force him to get a date, whether or not he liked it. She already had a date with the quirky and cheerful Spain.

"I'm not going... I'm staying home." He stated bluntly.

Belgium nearly sighed. She had expected this. She also knew he would just be home, being a useless slob, just watering and talking to his tulips like they would respond. It was sickening. She wanted him to have fun, just for once. She wanted him to let loose and enjoy himself.

"C'mon! You're just embarrassed that you don't have a date to go with, right?" Belgium said, placing her hands on her hips and looking straight into Netherlands' eyes.

He averted his line of sight from her, staring intently at the bright red tulip he held delicately in his hand, twirling it around, not speaking a word.

"Hah! I knew it! Don't be so shy, I'll find you someone to go with!" Belgium fistpumped the air, a smug expression on her face.

"You'll just get me some girl who just finds admiration for me, like a fangirl. I want someone... special to go with me." Netherlands said simply.

"Someone special? SOMEONE SPECIAL? OH MY DEAR TULIPS. BROER HAS A CRUSH! I'D NEVER THOUGHT THIS'D BE THE DAY I'M SO PROUD OF YOU!" Belgium shouted, running around the room. She was about to call the world's biggest rumour spreader, Prussia, before Netherlands replied.

"I-I do not have someone special!" He snapped, a light blush coating his cheeks. Before continuing, he gently put down the tulip he was holding, placing it in a glass vase with many other brightly coloured tulips. "And put down the phone. You're not going to call that idiot Prussia."

Belgium pouted, puffing her cheeks. "B-but broer !" She whined.

"Fine, I'll find out who that person is! I will find out, broer . Believe me... I WILL find out!" With that, Belgium strutted out of the room, folding her arms under her chest, still puffing out her cheeks.

Netherlands sighed.

"Sometimes.. Really... She's just too childish."

~

"... So it's that girl, from class 3A? Wait, you mean (Name)?" The person on the other side of the line said a 'yes', and Belgium's smirk grew even wider. She put down the phone and stretched her arms.

'Wahahaha! I've got you now, broer .. I will make you go to the dance with her!' Belgium said in her mind, devising a plan to get the two together.

~

The heavily anticipated day of the prom came even closer with passing time, encouraging the students to get a date before the dance. The only thing that could be heard throughout the school were things related closely to the prom. It was currently the excitement of the whole school.

You ate your lunch in silence, listening to the talk among the other students. It was sickening to hear the same thing every day, just about the prom. You were pondering over whether you should go for it or not. After all, there was nothing there to do but dance and interact with people, and also because you didn't have a date to go with.

Yes, you were currently having the cliché highschool girl problem- not having a date for the prom. You never expected this to happen to you. You did want to go to the dance, but going without a date would make you look like a loner. And you didn't want that to happen. You did particularly want a specific person to ask you out, but it was highly unlikely for him to do so.

Hardly halfway through your sandwich, your good friend Belgium placed her lunch down on the table and sat down. You look up, surprised by her sudden intrusion into your personal space and said a friendly 'hello', taking another bite out of your sandwich.

"Ah, (Name)! Have you gotten a date for the dance yet?" Belgium asked, almost too enthusiastically. You raised an eyebrow at her sudden enthusiasm, but nevertheless replied.

"No, have you?" You asked.

"Yeah! Spain asked me. Netherlands wasn't that happy about it though. He hates Antonio. Not sure why though." Belgium said, tucking into her lunch. Unbeknownst to you, she was mentally grinning at the fact that you didn't have a date to the dance yet. It made her plan much easier to excecute, knowing that there would be no obstacles.

"Good for you. I would like a date, but I wouldn't want it to be someone like France or Prussia." You shuddered, trying to push off the bad memories they gave you.

"Well then, why don't you go with broer? I'm very sure he'd be delighted to go with you." Belgium said, a devious grin on her face. It always gave chills down your spine whenever she gave you that expression. You knew she was planning something. Something bad.

Your face flushed at her statement. Cursing her mentally at her knowledge of your affection for her brother, you mumbled something incoherent, causing Belgium to grin even more, knowing that she had won.

She left the table in search of her brother, satisfied with your response. Belgium was going to hunt down Netherlands, and she would make him ask you out.  Oh yes, she was going to force him to ask you out.

With a snarky grin and glinting eyes, Belgium left the canteen.

~

"So... ask her out. She doesn't have a date yet. It'd be best that you ask her right now, if not, she might go with someone else~" Belgium said in a sing-song voice, trying her best to annoy her brother. She was partly correct though. It would be a smarter choice to ask before (Name) gets a date. After all, there are some guys who still don't have a date.

"And if you go, I'll stop annoying you for the rest of the month!" She added, hopeful that it would boost Netherlands' courage and ask (Name).

"... It's a deal, zus ."

~

Wandering through the hallways, you made your way towards your locker. Fumbling with the lock, you opened it, quickly gathering your books for your next class and putting the used ones in. You were about to slam the door and head off to your next class when you noticed a small blooming tulip peeking out from your stack of books.

Curiously, you gently pulled it out, careful not to break the stem. As you twirled it around, you found a small note attatched to it.

Dear (Name),  Would you be my date for the prom?
-Sincerely, Netherlands

After reading the note, your face flushed. Netherlands wanted to go to the prom with you? Obviously, you would accept! You smiled and giggled giddily, stumbling to your next class, not before you took the same tulip and flipped to the other side of the note, writing down your reply and slipping it into his locker.

~

Netherlands sighed. He wasn't sure if (Name) would accept. He stopped at his locker, opening it and placing his books in. A tulip slipped from the locker and fell to his feet. His eyes widened and then, he frowned. She probably just returned the tulip as a sign of rejection, not wanting to throw it away.

He picked it up, and looked at it. He looked at the note he tied to the flower before noticing a small arrow, signalling for him to flip the note to the other side.

Rather surprised, he flipped it over as requested, wondering what he would see on the other side.

Netherlands, I would love to be your date for the prom.
      - (Name)

Next to his name was a little heart, and he smiled a rather rare smile, his own heart fluttering.

~

He was nervous. No, extremely nervous. He wondered how he looked like. Belgium said he looked fine, rather classy and sharp. He didn't [wholeheartedly believe] her.

Netherlands knocked on the door, fiddling with the bouquet of tulips in his hands. He had grown them himself, just for you. He hoped it wouldn't be too much.

You opened the door, your heart ramming against your chest. You were unknowingly facing the same problem as Netherlands, wanting to impress each other. A small smile graced your face, easing the blush rising onto your cheeks. Netherlands held out the tulips, looking away shyly. You found this gesture adorable. You took the tulips, pressing them to your face and breathing in their aroma.

Netherlands gently pulled out one of the bright tulips, tucking it into your hair. This heartfelt gesture made your heart beat even faster, causing your cheeks to flush. You truly looked beautiful to him, perfect in any way.

He held out his hand, looking into your eyes, cheeks slightly pink. You took his hand, smiling softly. Walking down the pathway from your house, he lead you to his car and he opened the door for you.

You giggled lightly, appreciating the fact that he was trying very hard to be a gentleman. He frowned a little, thinking that you were laughing at him. You noticed this and smiled, trying to reassure him that it wasn't.

He drove you to the dance in silence while you sat in the car, content with being beside him.

Arriving at school, Netherlands opened the car door for you again.

The dance was being held in the gym, the only place big enough to host it. You walked there with Netherlands, your dress swaying with every step, not noticing that he was still grasping your hand gently.

The gym was filled with students, some dancing, some just drinking the beverages they served. The lively atmosphere was almost drawing you in to dance.

"(Name)! I see that broer asked you to be his date..." Belgium said, a smirk on her face, walking over to both of you. Netherlands' face cheeks turned a shade of red, and so did yours.

"You two are being so lovey dovey, holding hands and all~" She added, seeing that both your hands were tighly clasped together. You hadn't noticed this, and blushed even further.

"J-Just go away zus ..." Netherlands said, face bright as a cherry.

"Alright, alright... Have fun!" She walked away, happy for her brother.

Just then, the song changed to a one with a slower beat, rather romantic.

"W-would you like to dance, (N-Name)?" He cursed himself for stuttering, nevertheless hopeful that you would dance with him. The way he said your name made your heart flutter.

"S-Sure." You replied, trying your best not to act like you had won the lottery.

You were lead onto the dance floor by Netherlands. He awkwardly placed his hands your hips, unsure of how to act. You wrapped your arms around his neck, trying to reassure him. Looking into his beautiful green eyes, you smiled.

He seemed to gain more confidence and started moving his feet along with the song. you followed, and soon, you were swaying to the beat of the song.

As you danced, you felt even more at bliss. Netherlands was looking at you, a small, very tiny smile on his face. You blushed, placing your head on his shoulder. He felt rather warm and you could hear his heart beating rather fast. Both of you were in your own world now, not caring about the others in the room, only you two.

As the song began to reach the midway point, Netherlands said something but you couldn't hear it over the music. You made a small noise of question, asking him to repeat it. He paused for a short while before gathering his words and speaking again.

"I-I really like you, (N-Name)..." He said softly, acting shy and hesitant. His face was flushed, but you didn't notice as your head was placed on his shoulder. You were grateful that he couldn't see your face. You were sure it was the colour of a ripe tomato. Your heart began thumping against your chest as if it were running a marathon. Netherlands liked you. You couldn't have been happier. It was almost like a dream.

You murmured a reply, breathing against his ear. He shuddered, but the smile on his face grew.

"I really like you too, Neth."
